We got into Port Alberni around 9pm and headed out for some dinner and drinks. It turned out to be a late night and when the alarm rang at 4:30 I considered smashing it with a Penn 321.
We met up with our fishing partner Jerry for the weekend. Jerry has a brand new Campion 662 - what a sweet boat and he has it sert up perfect for fishing.
We started out trolling around Diplock and Pill and the action was quite slow- we didn't see any boats pick up fish. We would soon find out that the inside wasn't fishing very well of late, the big mature fish hadn't turned inside yet and the feeders that were there a few weeks before had moved, despite a fair amount of bait around.
With that in mind we decided to run t the close banks and see if we could scare some up. As happens on the banks, we dropped the gear and wer instantly into fish. We killed a small spring and then picked up 4 straight Hatchery coho. The bite wa on for about an hour and we released a few more wild coho and a small spring before the bite died.
Day two saw us try the inside again. We fished first light at Assits Island and saw one boat pick up two fish but it was quite slow for the rest of the boats.
We decided to run to Mile 21 but as we passed through 7 Mile nearly every boat was fighting a fish. We dropped gear and picked up a small spring and a few wild coho. It was one of those days for us, everyone around us was beating on them but we struggled to put fish to the boat and ended the day with just two chinooks, including a 22# fish that I got near the end of the day.
All in all a pretty slow couple days on the banks, and the Inside is definately slow right now, although that could change any day now.
