Fraser Valley Fishing Report

By STS - Sep 7, 2006

Fraser River / Fraser Valley Report

The Fraser River is in excellent condition, water clarity is 3 to 4 feet, temperatures are not a concern at this time. The sockeye season has been a good one; from August 6 to Sept 6 anglers filled the riverbanks in search of a few tasty sockeye. We have had a good kick at the can and now it's time to STOP bottom bouncing and bring out the bar rods.

The Fraser River is closed to sockeye fishing and bottom bouncing on September 7, 2006. Acceptable methods for fishing on the Fraser River are; bar fishing, spoon & spinner fishing, trolling and fly-fishing. There is also a bait ban in effect to protect Thompson Coho.

.

There is now a new fishing boundary in effect, views it by clicking this link, NEW FISHING BOUNDARY. This means that all anglers fishing for salmon after Sept 7, must fish below this boundary.

Sturgeon

Sturgeon fishing has been fair to excellent this past week, We have seen some nice fish caught both in the lower river and upper canyon area. Our largest landed fish this week was just over 7 feet, quite a few fish in the 4 to 6 foot range. While fishing in the canyon we latched onto a fish over 9 ft but unfortunately we didn't get the picture.

Peak sturgeon fishing Sept 15 to Nov 15

Sturgeon fishing will only improve over the next few weeks; soon the Harrison will start to turn on as will the lower Fraser River below Mission. Best baits for fall fishing is salmon parts, salmon eggs and other natural baits that would be found in our local waters. October is one of the best months for sturgeon.

Salmon

Now that sockeye fishing is closed, it's time for anglers to switch gears. There are many methods suitable for targeting salmon that are very productive and quite a bit more sporting than sockeye fishing. Bar fishing is one of my favorites but with such excellent visibility, Spoon fishing and spinner fishing should work well right now.

Many of the salmon migrating up the Fraser right now are heading for the Vedder River and Harrison River. Targeting these fish near the confluences would be a good bet. Some of the more productive bars are; Bowmans, Up/down Bar, Hendersons, Grassy, Wellington and Harrison Bar. These Bars produce good results using all methods mentioned above.

Another good fishery that will get going over the next month will be the Coho fishing near the confluence of the Sumas Canal. Many anglers prefer trolling or casting spoons and Spinners. Try using Gibbs T-Spoons for trolling or Gibbs Koho or Kroc spoons for casting. Both lures have been well proven in these areas.

Vedder River

The Vedder River is a ditch right now in desperate need of water. The summer Chinook fishery is over, most fish are spawning now. The next good fishery is the Coho fishery, although some fish are already in the system, best fishing will be over the next 4-6 weeks. Until the water begins to rise, the best fishing will be at first light in the deeper pools and holes. During low water conditions salmon will sneak up the river in the dark, holding in the deeper water during the day. Trying fishing those spots first light with spoons, spinners, fly-fishing or float fishing with roe or wool.

Some of the best Chinook fishing still to come.

Harrison River

Harrison River is low and clear. Lots of sockeye moving up the river heading for weaver creek but these fish are difficult to catch and are not open to retention. If you are planning on targeting Harrison Sockeye, best method is float fishing or still fishing with Sand shrimp or Krill. Please do not bottom bounce the Harrison for sockeye, bottom bouncing is best kept for the Fraser. If you want to fly fish for sockeye, best to wait another few weeks when these fish begin to pair up. Once they do, they become much more aggressive and will chase fly's.

We offer some great fly fishing adventures.
