Adam Chelini’s First Spey Rod Steelhead The Moose Admire Adam’s Steelhead Caught on the Upper Kalum Jeff Bright’s Largest Steelhead 20.7lbs (39” x 20”)
FISH TALES
This March saw some very nice steelhead landed by Nicholas Dean’s first anglers of the new fishing season. Conditions were fairly difficult with low, cold and very clean water making the Steelhead tough to entice. We did still managed to find some willing fish on every day.
Adam Chelini and Jake Bippart were back again after the incredible spring steelhead fishing they experienced last year including a 30 fish to the beach day on the Kalum. They didn’t land as many fish this spring but still had a great time. Adam was also our last guest in winter of 2005 and our first guest in 2006. I guess he likes the place.
I was teaching Adam how to Spey cast on the Skeena River when he hooked a perfect 12 pound hen Steelhead which he landed after a spirited battle. He caught his first Spey Rod Steelhead in the same run where Rob Brown taught me how to Spey cast and where I landed my first Steelhead on a Spey rod as well.
Adam and Jake also caught some more Steelhead including the Buck in the center picture with the Cow and Calf moose in the background 50 yards away. They saw a couple other moose on this trip as well but the moose weren’t as interested in watching the guys catch Steelhead.
Jeff Bright was back this spring with a couple of friends. They also experienced low cold water conditions but still managed to put some very nice fish to the bank on the fly. Including Jeff’s largest Steelhead ever measured out to just over 20 pounds.
Considering the very low water conditions and cold bright weather, March had excellent Steelheading this year. April should be superb this spring if March is any indication.
