The salmon fishing in all areas has been absolutely amazing. Ucluelet and offshore has not only had superb salmon fishing but the halibut are also biting very well.
Port Alberni Inlet
The Port Alberni Inlet has had some very good fishing over the past couple of weeks. Some excellent sized chinook have moved into the area and have produced some unbelievable fishing each morning. Some guides have hooked over 15 chinook per morning and some local anglers and visitors worldwide have done the same. The salmon have been holding at various areas from the China Creek Underwood and Dunsmuir Point area to Lone Tree and the Boy Scout Cabin in the Harbour. Fish have been averaging 15 to 30 pounds and have been caught on various lures. Most guides from Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing have been using the 0-15 bubble gum hootchie and the the 0-2. White hootchie and purple haze have also been doing well. Some anglers are having a lot of succes with anchovies. Most of the fish are between 30 and 50 feet. Some of the bigger fish are at 80 feet and lower. Leader lengths are 42 inches when using hootchies behind various flasher types and colors. Fishing in the inlet will remain hot for the next month and of course the salmon derby on the Labor Day weekend may see the biggest fish come from the inlet.
Barclay Sound
Fishing in Various areas of Barclay Sound has been incredible. Gilbraltor and Swale Rock have been very good over the last week. Guide Doug has had a great deal of success at Pill Point and Swale over the week on anchovie and green hootchies and spoons. Groups who have been guided daily and have returned with limits of chinook from 20 to 35 pounds. Anchovie behind a six foot leader and Purple haze teaser head and green, red, or purple haze flasher have been the best fishing method. Some coyote spoons especially green nickel and cop car have been good. The green spider back and T-Rex hootchie have been excellent hootchie choices. Leader lengths for hootchies are best at 42 inches. Barclay sound Fishing will get even better going into September as the Coho begin to appear mixed in with chinook. Anglers can expect many more excellent days into late September.
