SLIVERS CHARTERS SALMON SPORT FISHING
APRIL 11TH 2006 REPORT
STAMP RIVER
The winter steelhead guided river fishing is complete for 2006. There are many steelheads in the system but most have spawned and those that have not died are heading
back out to sea. Steelheads do not always die like salmon after spawning. Some steelhead may spawn three or four times during their lifetime. After spawning the steelhead go back somewhere in the North Pacific for 8 to 10 months and feed before returning back to their natural river.
Anglers will become more active in the river system sometime in early June when the first big runs of sockeye salmon arrive. Anglers will line the banks of the Paper Mill Dam area where they are often shoulder to shoulder casting into the river water. The keenest fisher person will often arrive and hour or two before daylight to get what they think is the best spot.
Summer steelhead will arrive as early as late June with the best angling for these great sport fish beginning in October and continuing through until mid November. Plans should be made now for any guided summer (fall) steelhead trip. E mail dlindy@shaw for more information.
WEST COAST (UCLUELET)
Our guide boats have done very well lately off of Ucluelet. The mouth of the Harbour and Mara Rock has been producing some very nice Chinook. Most of these fish have been taken on a hotspot or a glow in the dark flasher with a 42 to 46 inch white, white-blue, or green-white color pattern hootchie. Anchovy have also been very good. Rhys Davis teaser heads in glow, purple haze, or green are the best bait holders to use.
Halibut are also showing up in good numbers. Guide Al had success at south bank
and La Parouse which is 20 miles offshore. Halibut fishing will continue to improve in May and June. The Halibut are attracted by large schools of needlefish and sardines. Anglers will also have great success using fresh bait, octopus, sardines, and salmon bellies.
Ling cod fishing will open up on April 15th. During the past week guides have released 2 ling weighing up to 30 pounds. It seems the ling season will be very successful.
During the month of April we will continue our SEAFOOD SAFARI, which includes prawning, crabbing, Chinook, halibut, and bottom fishing. We will also try for oysters. These trips are usually 8-hour trips and are well worth the experience. There is nothing better on a beautiful spring morning and afternoon. The Pacific is wonderful on a clear spring day.
In May we will go full tilt on our halibut-salmon fishing. May is the month when this fishery picks up.
Please Note that we are introducing a wonderful package opportunity. Based on Triple Occupancy we are offering 3 days of Halibut and Salmon fishing and 3 night accommodation at the Terrace Beach Resort on the open Pacific Ocean for $789 per person.
BARKLEY SOUND
Winter Spring fishing in Barkley Sound has been hit and miss. There have been some encouraging days when the bait is found. Local anglers from Bamfield have had success in the mouth of the Bamfield Harbour and the Bamfield Wall. Mayne Bay has had some great days as has Sarita, Swale Rock, Diplock, and Swiss Boy. The outer area of Barkley Sound will improve when the first of the migrating salmon begin in mid May. Area such as Meares, Austin, Edward King and Beale will produce some nice quality Chinook. This summer Barkley Sound will have some of Vancouver Island?s best Chinook and Coho sport fishing. Good returns to Robertson Creek and various rivers and streams are forecast to be excellent. The Robertson Creek Chinook should begin showing up in Barkley sound in late July. Some excellent angling days at many popular spots (Pill and Diplock, Swale Rock, Kirby Point and Bamfield) are forecast for August and September. The Coho return is forecast to be very good and will enter the area in late August and will continue into October.
PORT ALBERNI INLET
The Inlet has been quiet except for sport prawning, which has kept some enthusiastic sport prawners busy. Local Port Alberni anglers are busy getting their gear ready for the upcoming inlet sport fishery, which begin in June, and carries on through October. The sockeye will begin schooling up in mid June and will continue into August followed by Chinook and Coho in August and September.
The Port Alberni Fishing Derby promises to be another success during the 3 day Labor Day Weekend. The Derby begins at 6 AM on the weekend Saturday and continues through until 3 PM on the Labor Day Monday. Take in some of the festivities and visit Port Alberni THE SALMON CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. Each day there are fabulous prizes.
