Sunshine Coast - Sechelt Fishing Report

VANCOUVER AREA REPORT: Sept 26, 2006
The Capilano fall Chinook fishery is presently well underway, and the fishing is SMOKIN' HOT!!! A new wave of Chinook seemed to arrive this past Saturday, and on Sunday we limited out with 6 Chinook (13, 19, 23, 23, 26.5, and 32 lbs). Of course it was really crowded (as all weekends are at the Capilano at this time of year), so we had another two very large fish cut-off, and we broke one off on our own accord for a total of NINE good Chinook hit on that one tide. In addition, we released 3 Jacks, and had a few more hits that didn't hook up. Had a couple more cut-off today, but boated 3 good Chinook (25, 27, and 37 lbs), and had several more good fish hit that we didn't manage to boat.
The beauty of it is that the fishery hasn't even peaked yet! The first week of October is traditionally the best week of this fishery, and with most salmon runs being late this year, we could even see the peak in the second week of October this year. We have yet to see the really large 40 and 50 lb fish arrive off the Fraser River, and I understand 40 and 50 lb Harrison White Chinook were still feeding out off Port Renfrew as late as mid-September. We should see some of these fish hit the Capilano (it produces Harrison stock in the hatchery now) sometime in October. It sure will be fun!!!
Remember, for the Capilano fishery, we only fish the flooding tide, and so charter will be booked accordingly this year. There will be a few days where a morning or afternoon 5 hour charter will cover the tide, but on many days the flood will be through the middle of the day, and charters will be longer than 5 hours in order to cover the whole tide. This will insure that you are out fishing when the bite comes on, as it is hard to predict when the bite will be the best in that flooding tide (sometimes early, sometimes late.....). Also, since crowds can be an issue on weekends, try to book mid-week for the Capilano if possible (and I'll take my days off on the weekend so I stay sane through the season).
I am presently fully booked into early October, but do have openings starting by late in the first week. The open times written in red are based on the flood tide at the Capilano, so I will put the date, length of trip, and time of departure. Other openings are just available, and would be for fishing off the Fraser, or early winter Chinook fishing etc....
As of the evening of Monday September 26th, I currently have the following openings still available: Tuesday Oct 4th (am), Wednesday Oct 5th (am), Thursday Oct 6th (am, pm: 2:00 dep. 5 hrs), Friday Oct 7th (am: 7:30 dep., 5 hrs - 3 hrs of flood), Monday Oct 10th (am: 7:30 dep., 7 hrs), Tuesday Oct 11th (am: 7:30 dep., 8 hrs), Wednesday Oct 12th (am: 8:00 dep., 8 hrs), Thursday Oct 13th (am: 9:00 dep., 8 hrs), Friday Oct 14th (am: 10:00 dep., 8 hrs), Sunday Oct 16th (pm: 12:00 dep., 7 hrs), Monday Oct 17th (pm: 12:30 dep., 6 hrs), Tuesday Oct 18th (pm: 1:00 dep., 6 hrs), Wednesday Oct 19th (pm: 1:30 dep., 5 hrs), Thursday Oct 20th (am: 7:30 dep., 5 hrs - 2+ hrs of flood, pm: 1:30 dep., 5 hrs - 3 hrs of flood), Friday Oct 21st (am: 7:30 dep., 5 hrs - 3+ hrs of flood, pm: 1:30 dep., 5 hrs - 2 hrs of flood). I am also quite open from Oct 24th, but will update how the fishery is going partway into October.
