Alberta has a number of excellent angling
opportunities, from the clear lakes of the north, through the streams and lakes
of the mountains, to the rivers and lakes of the eastern prairie. The variety of
water to fish is matched by the variety of species available. Rainbow Trout,
Cutthroat Trout, Walleye, Bull Trout and Northern Pike can all be found as well
as Canada's only population of the colourful Golden Trout.
The southwest corner of this province is famous for
its blue chip trout streams, most notably the Bow, the Oldman and the Crowsnest
Rivers. Trout fishing on these streams is world class, and anglers come from all
around to fly fish these scenic watersheds.
Rainbows are the predominant species found in
southern Alberta's trout streams, but brown trout are present in a number of
rivers including the Bow, the Oldman, and the Crowsnest downstream of Lundbreck
Falls. Bull trout, can also be caught in some of these streams. In the high
alpine lakes of the Canadian Rockies swim the small but colourful Golden Trout.
Anglers that are willing to hike and explore will be rewarded with the most
magnificently decorated of the trout species, the Golden.
