Fraser River
Water levels on the Fraser have been dropping everyday since June 14th. The water conditions are therefore improving for bar fishing and bottom bouncing opportunities. A very small snow pack means we are not going to see a huge runoff on the Fraser River. We can expect some very good fishing over the next four weeks with water levels shaping up, there are some impressive numbers of fish showing on the index. In fact the index is near record numbers for this time of year. The early red Chinook are a prized catch ranging over fifty pounds with average catches in the twenties. We have had a number of fifty plus Chinook weighed in the shop recently. These fish are only a few days from the salt water so they are in prime shape, often a gleaming bar of chrome that put out incredible battles on a rod and reel and if you win the battle these fish are superb eating. Everyone is waiting for the sockeye that are only days away from entering the system however fishing for this species is not permitted. The bottom bouncing technique will be questioned if there is a high incidence of sockeye catches, so use your good judgment over the course of the next few weeks. Bar fishing is producing well for the big Chinook. Will should have an opportunity on the sockeye near the end of July.
Harrison River
This system is always a very fishable water way as the flow comes out of Harrison Lake is typically a beautiful green color. The migratory Cutthroat travel the lake and river in search for food providing anglers a venue that includes spectacular scenery and some promising fishing opportunities.
Chehalis River
Opened June 1st. A few anglers have ventured over to check on Summer Steelhead and or the possibility of some early Chinook. Water levels are lower than normal for this time of year. Not much happening at this time.
Chilliwack/Vedder River
The river opened July 1st with some nice fish on the first day up to twenty pounds The river is in great shape right now with only a few fish in the system. The Chinook are spread throughout the entire river at this point with reports of catches from top to bottom. Most of this run is due to arrive towards the middle of July. Each day should improve for numbers of fish with the peak time fro July 15-31st.
Local Fraser Valley Lakes
Most of the local lakes have been producing very well. Jones Lake, Chilliwack and Cultus are worth a mention. Kawkawa Lake has been very good lately for Kokanee. The All About Fishing Family Event was a huge success with over 250 participants. Everyone had a great time, there were tons of prices for everyone and the kids shared in a very special day. Thank you to all that made this event happen from the FVSS.
