Like the rest of the prairies, Manitoba
offers some excellent fishing opportunities for walleye, pike, perch and in the
north lake trout. What the other prairie provinces lack that Manitoba can lay
claim to is some of North America's fisnest channel cat fishing. Manitoba's Red
River attracts anglers from around the world who are eager to wrestle with these
oversized, tough cats.
Fisherman target channel cats in the Red using heavy rods and
large reels. Bait consists of chunks of goldeye fished below a large float. A
lucky angler will hook into numerous fish over ten pounds in a days efforts with
the odd fish exceding twenty pounds. A real trophy will be in the thirty pound
range. The Red River is strictly catch and release for these big channel catfish
so don't go to the Red with the hopes of klunking a few!
If it's big walleye you are after, try mammoth Lake Winnipeg.
It is thought that a twenty pound walleye is a distinct possibility due to the
high numbers of large walleye being caught the past few years. There are
numerous lakes in Manitoba's north that offer fantastic Northern Pike fishing
for fish up to twenty five pounds!
