Wild salmon are the lifeblood of the North Coast and of the Skeena River. They have supported First Nations people of the coast and the interior for thousands of years. They continue to be the basis of many people's livlihood in this region: traditional subsistence fishing, commercial fishing, fish processing, and sports fishing. Wild salmon are a "keystone" species. Without them, the complex web of plant and animal life that constitute our north coast forest ecosystem would be devastated.
While we cannot easily get rid of the existing farms which blight the south coast of the province, there's still time to stop their incursion on to the north coast. We can stop them if enough people call for the reinstatement of the moratorium on their further expansion. We must act now! Three sites have been approved and they may start building them any time- right in the southern approaches to the Skeena River. More sites are scheduled for approval. If you wish to join SOSS or support us, please read and sign our declaration and come out to the May 7th event we’ll be advertising soon.
