New Melones Resevoir
Kokanee Power held a team derby Aug. 19 in which teams of two competed to weigh in their biggest three fish. I would have to say fishing was generally pretty slow. Robbie Thorsen and I only managed to get two in th e boat. It was that way for many others, altho a few had the right location and got into really nice fish. They averaged 17 to 18 in. It had been very good unmtil just recently. You know...You should have been here yesterday! Apparently the lowering of the water has had an adverse effect. Fish were very deep (90+) and scattered except for the one location we didn't fish. But when its good, this lake puts out very nice sized koks.
Bullards Bar Resevoir
Even worse than New Melones, as in a total bust. Again, water level is being lowered and the lake is warming up. We could only locate fish way up into the river entrance which was over run by lake lice (waterskiers and jetskies). This is a lake that has always produced, but we never got so much as a strike. We graphed a lot of fish on the bottom at almost 300 ft. Otherwise nothing. This was the second worst day of Aug. according to the Maori fishing charts, so maybe they're onto something. Very humbling.

Indian Valley Reservoir
I had already made plans to be there Wednesday & Thursday (6/28
&6/29), despite the heat. When we got there Tuesday evening, the "resort"
owner said Sep, FS, WON and others where hitting the lake on Monday and Tuesday.
It will be interesting to see what they say. I didn't like the sound of all
those experts hammering the lake. Anyhow, they are right about the trees. The
water is fairly consistent 150' and there are tree tops 30 to 70' below the
surface. Snag city! My buddy managed 3 tree hookups with lost gear, I only lost
a hook. We got one BIG bruiser Koke (about 18") and two smaller 12-13", all out
in the middle of the lake. Very fat! Had one long line release. The Ospreys
fishing were worth the trip to see. There were 7 boats on the water Wednesday, 9
on Thursday morning. No one seems to fish the evening. We tried and struck out.
We just could not get the right combo working. It was pretty slow for most
folks. And boy was it HOT out (105-110). The north end of the lake is really
hairy. There are tons of trees just below the surface! And the wind? There was
virtually none!!! The better part of the morning was glass smooth. A note about
the road: I have a tandem axle trailer that rode the road very well. The single
axle trailers were really bouncing!!! And steep hills, watch out for hot brakes!
